After all, making the wrong decision means having to experience amazingly bad service that’s way too complicated and has too big of a price tag.

Rest assured, this guide will help you save precious time and money.

1. Mailchimp

Mailchimp is one of the first email marketing softwares that many people come across.

Being one of the most prevalent email marketing software in the industry (and cheapest), it’s only natural that most business owners would try or consider Mailchimp when starting out.

But cost and value don’t necessarily match up in most cases. It’s fairly easy to use and has a low initial cost. Design-wise, it has hands down the best email templates out there in the market. With a versatile drag & drop feature, it also has one of the best email builders.

But when it comes to automation, Mailchimp falls behind many of the existing players in the market. Its features are very basic and can be a real headache if you start getting serious with email marketing.

Great for it’s design and simplicity. There are better options for its price point but a good choice if you are particularly concerned with email design.

2. Activecampaign

Activecampaign offers advanced features at an affordable price for an email marketing software.

Housing one of the most advanced automation features while still staying user friendly. They’re one of the most affordable ones considering its fairly advanced features.

The user interface is pretty well-designed considering how complex you can go with the software. This is a plus point for businesses looking to get serious with email marketing but would prefer to test the water’s first.

The customer service is also very notable as it is one of the few email marketing software that offers additional phone support on top of email support.

However, it does have it’s cons too. It tends to get a little slow and laggy at times but it doesn’t seem to be a frequent problem. The templates and designing options aren’t anything to brag about unless you’re serious with your email designs.

Small tasks like text formatting and gif uploading can also get glitchy at times.

Overall, it’s great for small businesses that wish to access a wide array of automation features at a low cost. Every software does have its minor drawbacks but it makes up for it with their customer service.

3. Ontraport

Ontraport is more costly than other options, but comes with high performance for the price.

According to Vishen, the founder of Mindvalley,  they spent six months comparing delivery rates, open rates, and the general performance of Ontraport against all of their major competitors, and Ontraport came out on top. And they moved all 1 million of their subscribers to the platform.

But, their performance comes with a price tag. Being a higher priced option than their other providers but still cheaper than giants like Infusionsoft.

If you’re a rapidly growing business, this would be something to look at. The fees for adding extra users, emails and contacts are much lower than other providers. As you grow and add more emails to your list and require further access to features, the upgrading costs aren’t as high as other softwares.

They’re also real champs for avoiding the spam box, as they have their own IP addresses with high sender reputations.

It does take a little more time to learn the software which is normal when using any sort of automation software. But they aren’t the prettiest of dashboards, it is a titan for its price point.

It’s an optimum choice for information product businesses along with membership sites and training or education companies.

4. Drip

Drip is a good choice for small e-commerce sites that want to explore advanced features at a relatively low price.

Having a strong visual plus point was their selling point in the past but since that is slowly becoming the norm for other email marketing software. They recently transitioned to specializing in smaller e-commerce sites.

This is also one of the fairly amazing option for those looking to get serious with their marketing. They have a pretty strong feature for tags and events which allows for advanced segmentation. Their features available are quite generous for its price point, unlocking plenty of features for their lower priced subscriptions.

Apparently there are some issues with their workflows, A/B testing and reports.

As a whole, this is an ideal choice for small e-commerce sites with strong coding backgrounds and interested in going deeper with their automations.

5. Hubspot

Pioneers of the term "inbound marketing", HubSpot offers almost anything you need, for a price

Pioneering the term ‘inbound marketing’, they’re the epitome of the ‘one-stop-shop’ in the email marketing software universe. They have a CRM, email marketing automation, a content management system and a landing page builder platform all catered for small businesses. Having it all in one place means their analytics are amazing. But, some may argue that they’re trying to do too much at once.

Also, the price creep can rack up really quick. You can easily go from $50/month to $2000/month by just adding a couple features and growing your list.

Whilst on the pricier side, they do house a boatload of in-depth marketing training along with some pretty good customer service (they have phone support too). If that’s your thing, they’re a great choice.

6. Benchmark

Another great affordable option with amazing customer support

This is yet another affordable option, right there with Mailchimp. But it has a one-up with their amazing customer support. Mailchimp only has advanced support with paid options.

Feature-wise, Benchmark also has a higher leg up on their automation features. They have a wide variety of autoresponders available which are real easy to set up and use.

If you’re looking for something affordable but don’t want to sacrifice too much on the features compared to other email marketing software. This is the one for you.

At the end of the day, different businesses look for different things.

Using any of these options would already put you far ahead of many other businesses who aren’t investing in any sort of automation.

Productivity is the name of the game when it comes to optimizing business operations & efficiency for more profits and growth. And that becomes all the more important when it comes to small businesses considering their size and pool of resources.
